Axe Steeler is a new band from Colombia that is mining the vein of '80s heavy metal that bands like Striker, Enforcer, etc. have been working the last few years. The songs heavily employ twin-guitar melodies and galloping riffs on the band's debut, On the Run. The songs are energetically played and don't skimp on the '80s vibe with titles like "Back to the Stage," "Axe of Steel" and "Over the Top". The riffing isn't pushing the envelope much but is entertaining enough, while the vocals are of the extremely high-pitched variety and to be honest, I thought it was a female singer at first (my apologies to vocalist Javier Padilla, sorry about that mate!) Axe Steeler doesn't really stand out from the crowd yet, but I think they show some real promise and I will be watching them in the future. In the meantime, On the Run makes for a great party or driving listen. |
