This is a cool little split between Canadian Traveler and Finnish Coronary. Most splits that land here are mostly black and sometimes death metal, so a split between two heavy metal bands is a nice refresher. Each band contributed three songs for this release. Traveler is the more "accessible" of the two with very clean singing that wouldn't scare away non-metal listeners, especially on "Behind the Iron" and "Mindness Maze." The band's style is closer to that of early 80s NWOBHM bands ... on steroids. The delivery is much faster for the most part. Catchy, clean heavy metal. At times the vocal style reminds me a little bit of that of Mathias Blad on the first Falconer album, though less melodic. As a Canadian, I feel bad for liking Finland's Coronary's songs better but their style is much closer to speedy Judas Priest and even a bit of Exciter in the riffs. The vocals remind me a little bit of Scorpions' Klaus Meine but with a more metal delivery. He has that kind of "nasal" high-pitched voice. Overall, Coronary are faster and heavier here than their Canadian counterparts though you can certainly hear that both bands a few common influences from the late '70s and early '80s. There's a stark contrast between the two sides of the release and both are good, the best one really being up to your own taste as both bands deliver very good material on this split. |
