Hailing from Germany is Goat Explosion, a band that pays homage to the late-70s stoner era and mixes it with some Traditional Heavy Metal akin of the '80s. Shitty name aside, these dudes have some cool tricks up their sleeves with a soft melancholic vibe that surrounds the album, all while cranking up a Black Sabbath influence and throwing some Thin Lizzy-esque passages here and there. Relying heavily on crunchy riffs, the effort is OK, but actually falls short of being impactful. Tracks like "The Wandering Specter" and "Dionysian Reveries" have great guitar work, but the whole experience sounds kind of neutered and the record never quite lifts off to reach a peak or provide us with actual memorable moments. The homogeneity of it makes every song sound similar to the last one songwriting-wise, and while this is completely fine in terms of continuity and execution, it doesn't help with the replay factor. It's a cool alternative for those hardcore Stoner Doom fans, but won't make the rest of us cum in our pants from excitement. |
