On Thorns I Lay have been around for like 25 years, though their output has been sporadic, and the band has ceased activity a few times. This is one of those bands that was around for the formation of Doom/Death, and though they drifted off into goth rock crap for a while, this time out they have at least made a metal album. This is not bad, and I find some good melodies in the songwriting. This is very standard Doom/Death that almost feels like a relic of the 90s, with piano interludes and a steady, plodding pace. If you like this kind of thing, then Aegean Sorrow will be a real find for you. Me, I find the nostalgia filter is not enough to overcome how very pedestrian this is. This is a pleasant enough disc, and fans of classic Paradise Lost or My Dying Bride will dig it, but it's not great or anything. |
