Goat Worship is a black/thrash band from Brazil that plays in the style of early Venom on album number two, Shore of the Dead. Hades is the lone entity in Goat Worship and he saws away at the guitar, pounds the drums and employs a proto-black shout, the latter fairly low in the mix. Hades sings about a mix of Norse ("Yggdrasil", "Kingdom of the Gods") and just plain evil topics ("The Blood Countess," "The Burning of the Witches") but it is hard to make out many of the words due to the placement of the vocals. Some of the riffs are first-rate but Hades has a habit of settling on one and repeats it to the point it becomes a drone ("Shore of the Dead" is the biggest offender as Hades stretches the track out past nine minutes in length) and that detracts from the album. In short, if you are still riding the retro black/thrash wave, Goat Worship’s Shore of the Dead will do nicely, thank you. As is the case with many of these releases, expect stuff you’ve heard before.
