Mad Hatter’s debut album is not as schizophrenic or ... well, mad as its Lewis Carroll counterpart but, unlike the Alice in Wonderland character, doesn’t quite leave its mark as a memorable piece of art. The tempo adopted for much of the album’s length allied with Petter Hjerpe’s unoriginal Sammet-esque vocals are downsides to the experience; songs like "Fly Away" and "Face the Truth", for instance, scream with a heavy Edguy influence and don’t bring anything we could define as worthwhile to the table, but good pieces like "Phantom Riders" – which has a cool chorus reminiscent of Orden Ogan – and the decent closers "Bring Me the Moon" and "Mad Hatter Become" are enough to turn things around and make the effort a good one. Fans of Edguy, Avantasia and ReinXeed will enjoy this. |
