The last Monsterworks album I reviewed was 2016's Black Swan Annihilation, which I quite liked. I missed 2017's Altern?tum but picked up the thread with 2018's Scale and Probability and almost immediately wished I hadn't. This band has been hard to classify in the past and I get that they are an experimental project but this new one is going down a path I'm not likely to follow. There are still some death growls and heavy riffs, but Scale and Probability is mostly just post-rock noodling and angst-ridden screaming. I kept thinking of The Doors at their most self-indulgent with Kurt Cobain at the microphone. Pass. |
