So I was trying to figure out why The Witching Hour from Finland's Spellwitch reminded me so much of early 2000s power metal bands like Conquest and especially Celesty. When I looked up the band on Metal Archives, I saw that lone member Kimmo Perämäki, who handles all the instruments and vocals, sang on Celesty's Reign of Elements. Mystery solved. If you've heard Reign of Elements, you'll no doubt recognize the vocal lines here as they are very similar (in a good way). Musically, this is still power metal but crunchier and less ethereal than old Celesty. More like Mob Rules with some speedy bits but plenty of mid-tempo material as well. It isn't earth-shattering, but fans of Northern European power metal should enjoy it well enough. |
