Longing for the Untold is considered an EP, but at just under 38 minutes it's longer than some full-length albums; I guess the three bonus tracks are responsible for this "anomaly". ;) This is some really good black metal out of Spain that's just done right. The dominant atmosphere is what grabbed me when I first listened to this and it never lets up. Dark, haunting, just messing with your mind. It doesn't matter whether it's in a slow or fast song, the atmosphere is always there and just keeps you pinned down. I wish more bands mastered that art as there's nothing like a malevolent atmosphere on a black metal album that makes you go through a range of the darkest emotions. The vocals are equally as haunting and just bring the atmosphere to the next level. Awesome stuff. Musically, it's slow to mid-paced for the most part with the occasional faster numbers. This is not messy in any way, nothing gratuitous just for the sake of showing off, the songs strung together for a perfect ensemble. It's been awhile since I've found so much satisfaction out of a black metal album. I don't know if the band's earlier material is anywhere near this good, but I'll definitely have to check it out. |
