Leaves Eyes' evil doppelgangers Atrocity have put out their latest release, an EP titled Masters of Darkness. Since the extreme edges of metal aren't really my thing, I like these EPs as they provide just enough flavor without wearing out their welcome. As you might expect from the guys that make up a symphonic band like Leaves Eyes (minus the female singer), Atrocity are quite melodic in their death/thrash songwriting which features tight, wicked riffing, machine-gun drumming here and there and palatable death growls. None of the songs is all that memorable but all are executed with German precision. I do think the angelic choirs are overused and the counterpoint they provide fades rapidly. Masters of Darkness isn't revolutionary, but it is a short and sweet shot of death/thrash. |
