Occultum, from Toruń, Poland, previously burned black candles in their secret rituals under the Amorak moniker from 2003-2015. What you get here are seven tracks of early Dark Funeral, early Mayhem and early Immortal-tinged, raw and straightforward Black Metal cuts that are meant to cause at least some tiny avalanches up in the mountains of Norway. More seriously, for the most part Occultum sounds as enjoyable as many more established Black Metal acts out there, having the right amount of grimness and rawness and trusting their insane and chaotic Black Metal manifesto more than what the doctor ordered. I would not break my leg for this stuff, but would still welcome it with open arms, just for the sake of enjoying some old-fashioned Black Metal's beautiful grimness. Occultum is just a perfect candidate for those types of moments. |
