Secrets of the Magick Gimoire is another fine Power Metal album from Italy's Elvenking, The band has been on a solid run, excluding the weak Era from 2012. If you've heard any of Elvenking's back catalog, you already have a good idea what to expect; plenty of double-kick drums, smooth melodies, technical solos, the works. Based on the country of origin and the title, the lyrics are fantasy-based so you also get some Renaissance-type music to cement the feeling of being back in a time when people spelled "magic" as "magick" and kept their spells in grimoires. Unlike countrymen Rhapsody, Elvenking dirty up their sound with some extra crunch in the guitars and vocals with a Martin Steene/Iron Fire edge, not to mention the occasional harsh singing. This means even if you dislike "flower" metal you can probably find something to like on Secrets of the Magick Grimoire. The biggest drawback is it sounds an awful lot like Elvenking's past works and even after half a dozen spins nothing specific sticking in my head other than the impression that it is a really enjoyable listen overall. Feel confident to pick up Secrets of the Magick Grimoire if you a fan of Power Metal as Elvenking has come up with a successful formula and knows how to execute it.
