It's been a while since I last heard some Arch Enemy, having kind of lost track of the band – if not the entire melodic death metal genre – for the past few years. Just like with Angela Gossow's debut on Wages of Sin, I still have a hard time believing these are female vocals; Alissa White-Gluz delivers the goods in top-notch fashion. This album certainly puts the melodic into the genre as this is way more melodic and "digestible" than I remember the band to be. I won't say more commercial as this is not it at all, but I think that the music here is bound to appeal to a wider base of metalheads, especially those in the more traditional, clean genres, at least if they can live with the death growls. There's even a bit of a symphonic vibe that fits surprisingly well. There's a lot of catchiness despite the overall sound being a bit depressing, which helps keep the listener attentive. Overall, Will to Power flows well and marries the band's earlier sound with a more approachable, melodic heavy metal sound.
