I heard a lot of good stuff about Spellblast's debut album Horns of Silence, but when I finally got around to hearing it I was not impressed. Now here we have album number two for this Italian band who play double-bass Power Metal flavored with folk music. The 'folk' part is not that pronounced, consisting mostly of violins used to accent the music, and a general folky vibe to the riffs and vocal melodies.

I have to say I like this a lot better than Horns of Silence as one: the production is miles better, and the folk elements are integrated better into the music as a whole. Vocalist Jon Spagnuolo has improved a lot, especially in the realm of creating memorable and enjoyable vocal hooks. The entire album is sprinkled with spot-on melodies and catchy phrases, with nary a trace of growling, which folky bands often feel compelled to include. There is still an overall stylistic similarity to old Elvenking or maybe Turisas, but this album is miles better than anything either of those bands have released. The music here is sometimes a bit clunky, but it more often actually soars.

What I'm trying to say is I was all set to give this disc a resounding "Meh" but instead I have to admit that I was entertained through the whole thing. This is not the most wonderful thing ever, but this is a hell of a fun disc of folkish Heavy Metal. I recommend it.
