My first reaction upon seeing this band's name was that this was a Black Metal band but, nope, this is basically traditional Heavy Metal. There's an "obscure NWOBHM" vibe to this demo - think of those lesser known, blue collar-ish bands that recorded a 7" on a small budget back in the late 70s/early 80s. A very rough sound, a lack of finesse that is very warm to the ears. Add to this the occasional Maiden-inspired riffage. This is very upbeat music, very positive-sounding both musically and vocally. The vocals however are the Achille's heel here: The performance is rather unequal, the singer sounding much better when he uses a rougher style of vocals than when he goes overly melodic and tries to sing too high - then all hell breaks loose and it made my teeth cringe every time. The guy does the lower-pitched, rough vocals pretty well and they should probably try to write their vocal lines accordingly - the higher range just doesn't sound good at all, and also makes his accent a little too noticeable. If you look (listen) past that, you can hear some good, honest, unpretentious traditional Heavy Metal with most of the good ingredients: Catchy with cool little solos, galloping riffs and the likes. If they can get the vocal work right, these guys might just get a nice little album out there (well, they do have an album out, which I haven't heard yet. ;)) |
