This is an unusual disc, as this is a Spanish Blackened Doom band who are not spending all their time ranting about suicide or nihilism, but rather opt for fantasy/satanic lyrics I would tend to expect from a much thrashier band. This is slow, crawling Doom with a blackened guitar sound and rasping vocals that convey a lot of venom and hatred. There's nothing light about the delivery on this, and the oppressive, inimical atmosphere is what makes this work. The lyrics are terrible, and there are a couple of excursions into sadomasochistic porn that are downright idiotic ("Eat my cock/Fucking bitch") but with the screeching it's not like you can understand them. The songs are long, and somewhat unfocused, but they carry a lot of conviction, and so while a lot of this might be a bit faceless, it is never dull. Barbarian Swords are a bit different sounding, and very extreme. Not a disc for the faint-hearted. |
