Spiritus Mortis is a Finnish band that takes their cues from the Solitude Aeturnus school of Doom; slow, crushing riffs soaked with reverb and clear, plaintive vocals. Album number 4, The Year is One, is a huge slab of Doom that evokes the 70s without sounding dated. The singer has a surprisingly dynamic voice and really sells the lines. The songs are well put together but I can't say there is one hook or riff that really stuck with me apart from the awesome opening of "Robe of Ectoplasm" that starts the album. Had the album maintained that level of cool, we'd be talking a completely different experience but alas, it does not. Nevertheless, The Year is One is full of quality Doom that should please fans of the genre but doesn't do anything they won't have heard before. |
