I guess I'd call Italy's Gargoyle a Death/Doom band with the slow tempos, depressing moods and clear singing that rapidly descends into guttural growls on their EP Reborn in Blasphemy. The band seems to be going for a low-fi sound but that doesn't mean it has to sound like crap, which Reborn in Blasphemy does. Moaning and growling in the back of a muddy, disjointed mix that sounds like it is a mile away and under 10 feet of water makes for a painful listening experience. I think I get what Gargoyle is going for, but they've missed the mark and not even spectacularly, but in a dull, "just there" way. |
