This is some decent, sometimes pretty catchy power metal that won't revolutionize the genre, but it is pretty entertaining overall. The vocals stand out in that they're kind of raw and uneven, sometimes being spot on and sometimes being borderline cringe worthy. Still, the most memorable songs such as the title track, "Watchmen" and "Spirit of the Night" owe a lot to the catchy vocal melodies. It's all a matter of getting used to it. Welcome to the End is less polished than most of the power metal I've heard in recent times. It's not polished like a classic car, but rather raw and even a little bit "messy", and that helps set it apart a little bit, being more akin to a muddy off-road truck than a shiny sports car (I have absolutely no idea what's up with me and car references today). The album is rough but still very melodic and contains a good mix of speedy and energetic versus more solemn and darker songs, so despite containing 14 songs lasting over one hour in total, it's varied enough that it doesn't get boring. Not perfect nor revolutionary by any means, Welcome to the End is a good alternative to happy and polished power metal while still sharing the basic ingredients. Worth checking out. |
