Third album for Italian band Axevyper, who include a number of veterans on their roster, including former members of notable bands like Assedium and Hyborian Steel. If you know those bands, then the style here should come as no surprise, as this is punching, crunching True Metal to the bone. Into the Serpent's Den is just a riff-filled feast for fans of epic and true metal, and from the opening lick of "Brothers of the Black Sword" there is not a dull moment on this album. All the songs here are good in one way or another, packed with chugging riffs, pounding rhythms, and some quite good leadwork. If this band has a weakness, it's vocalist Luca Cicero. He's not bad, but he has a limited range and not a really resonant tone. He makes up for it by working within his abilities and fueling his performance with a lot of enthusiasm, but on the more melodic moments he just sounds weak. This band could really go up a level if they had a better singer. That said, fans of bands like Wotan, Omen, Ironsword, and Battleroar will find a lot here to love. |
