Another sign of the resurgence of the French scene. Lutece deliver their third album, and it is a snarling, bellowing show of force. This band is definitively and unregenerately Black Metal, but while their guitar sound and vocal attack remind me of Marduk or Enthroned, their songwriting is big and epic, stretching at the seams of the genre. Lutece bring big, tolling riffs offset by more direct blasts of cold aggression, and they expertly manage the transitions from pummeling ferocity to more expansive and melodic passages. A class album. |
