Will to Power is the third full-length from The Netherlands Lord Volture and it continues the trend of improvement the band has been on since the debut, Beast of Thunder, in 2010. Not much has changed in the band's overall style of crunchy, U.S.-styled Power Metal but the songwriting has taken a big step forward. There's still nothing particularly original but the riffs are cool, the solos spot-on and singer David Marcelis, who has a great voice, finally has some lines and choruses with some meat on them. On Will to Power Lord Volture channel their inner Malice and nowhere is that more apparent than on "The Pugilist" which will have you hearing echoes of "License to Kill" after just one listen. Marcelis can really hit the high notes and guitarist Paul Marcelis (who I assume is the brother of David) and Leon Hermans trade leads smartly. The rest of the album teeters back and forth between Malice and Ripper-era Iced Earth and while the former may seem to be more of a compliment than the latter I mean both in a positive way. Lord Volture are still not what you'd call required listening but with Will to Power they are finally entertaining. |
