Here is yet another Black/Thrash album, this time courtesy of Italy's Satanika, a band joining the crowd already worshiping at the altar of dark gods, Celtic Frost. Evil, grimy riffs, pounding, lightning-fast drumming and proto-Black/Death vocals, with an obligatory "oooh!" here and there, touch on all the elements you expect from this style. There are some hokey, spoken-word intros leading into many of the songs, likely from some grade-B horror "classic." While these are cheesy, they do enhance the flow of the songs on Nightmare, the band's third full-length. Apart from that, we aren't getting anything new or even particularly well written, but the energy and over-the-top satanic lyrics offset some of the pedestrian nature of the album. Nightmare isn't mandatory but worth a listen if you're a fan of the almighty Frost and newer acts like Desaster, Guerra Total, Aura Noir, etc. |
