I enjoyed both Delta and Maria Magdalena, the last two releases from Visions of Atlantis but, sadly, the same can't be said for their 2013 release Ethera. The same dueling clean male and female vocals are present but the songwriting has taken a nosedive. None of the songs have much replay value though they are well played. A lot of Gothic influences are starting to creep in around the edges of Visions of Atlantis' performances and a few emo touches as well, which is troubling. Both singers go over the top selling their vocal lines and seem to forget this is supposed to be Power Metal, not Broadway. Ethera isn't awful but it's not great, either. Delve into Visions of Atlantis' back catalogue instead. |
