I was already familiar with Slavecrushing Tyrant from their kickass self-titled debut album from a few years ago, so I was willing to give this a go despite my distaste for splits. This is two Polish bands – five cuts by one-man band Severe Storm and then four from Slavecrushing Tyrant.

Severe Storm don't have the most exciting name for a studio project, but their work here is solid raw Black Metal with melodic tremolo riffs and a decent amount of atmosphere. There's nothing revolutionary about it, but the guitar sound has bite and the vocals are pretty damned necro. This is very stripped-down and reminds me of early Darkthrone, only less harsh and more moody.

Slavecrushing Tyrant are much more a Black/Thrash kind of act, with hammering drums and a deeply dirty recording sound. Their vocals are recorded waaaay back in the mix, and the slashing, thrashing guitars are right up front where they should be. This shit chugs and pummels and they even rip out some pretty decent leads. Of the two bands, Slavecrushing Tyrant are way more bad ass, and while I enjoyed the Severe Storm tracks, Slavecrushing Tyrant rip out such bestial Hellhammer-meets-Morningstar slayage that I just want to hear their next album that much more.

So good split. One good band, and one awesome band. If you have not yet heard Slavecrushing Tyrant, then this would be an okay place to start.
