While their name isn't exactly unique (there are 28 bands listed at Metal-Archives with that exact name or a close approximation) this band from New York State has a sound unlike typical Thrash/Death. Maelstrom has been in existence, off and on, since the late 80s, but only have a couple of demos and this EP, It Was Predestined, which is being re-released in 2012 by Itchy Metal Entertainment. Thrash and Death elements are clearly present in Maelstrom's music. Vocalist Gary Vosganian does not employ a typical Death growl; rather his singing is clear, yet full of anger and aggression. He isn't afraid to let loose the occasional demonic howl but generally allows you to hear the lyrics. Guitarist Joey Lodes is completely at home riffing like a maniac but his talent extends far beyond that. He creates some great melodies and his solos are not unlike classic shredders from the 80s such as Malmsteen and Friedman.

The three songs on It Was Predestined are almost progressive in their complexity and that might not sit well with everyone. Thrash riffing leads to frantic solos then to acoustic passages while tempos change on a dime. There is a lot going on in each song so the EP feels like it fills more space than its 18+ minute duration would suggest. This isn't the type of music you put on and start singing along with right away. It requires a bit more persistence to absorb it all, despite the short length, but it is well worth the investment in time. It Was Predestined is not your typical music and for that I give Maelstrom high marks. This isn't a mix of my favorite genres but it is unique enough that I keep coming back to it. If you want something different that is still heavy as hell, It Was Predestined is one to check out.
