Flame of War formed in 2004, but they sound more like a band from the 90s. This outfit is obviously dedicated to the sounds of the second wave, with the raw, dirty guitar sound and the cold, atonal riffs. This is pretty raw Black Metal, but not too raw, as they do manage to work a lot of melody into the guitarwork, whether it be tremolo picking or a riffier approach, they manage to keep their songs hooky and guitar-driven. True to the form, the drums and bass are low in the mix, and even the vocals are half-buried in the guitar assault – which is exactly the way it should be, and thank fuck they got that right. There is nothing on here you have not heard a lot if you listen to Black Metal, this is just done a good reach better than the standard: better riffs, better songs, and an energetic but cold atmosphere. Worthy. |
