Voices of Destiny is a Symphonic/Power Metal band cast from the Epica mold. There are "beauty and the beast" vocals, major chord guitar riffs and orchestral keyboards. Their second album, Power Dive, didn't do much for me at first, but has slowly and insidiously wrapped its infectious melodies around my eardrums. I think my initial indifference was partly due to the vocals of singer Maike Holzman. She has a perfectly good voice but I just don't really care for it. She has a bit more of a "Broadway-style" delivery than I like. Regardless of my opinions about the vocals, songs like "Untouchable" and "Red Winter's Snow" are fantastically catchy songs. The mood of the album is on the dark side but no less fun to listen to because of that fact. The production is solid and the sound is big and full. If you enjoy Epica, Battlelore and the like, you'll have a hard time finding any fault with Power Dive. Voices of Destiny may not be a lot different from those bands but they do the style well. |
