The sound of this album is much better than the songs themselves. The recording on this is masterful, with an excellent control of sound and space, creating a big, echoing guitar tone with a very cold feel. The whole band has a lot of depth and separation, giving the impression of a cathedral-like place for the sound.

This band's straight Black Metal is serviceable but tends to go on and meander, losing focus. The slower, more melodic parts, like standout "Dark Ages" are where this band's melodic talents really shine. The slower speed gives them room to work and really create a mood. When they speed up they sound much more generic and less interesting. Promising.
