I liked 2007's Rise to Dominate well enough, but I can't say I managed to get into Path of Fire, the new album by these Swedish death metallers. No stranger to this is the fact that on this one, there is quite a revenge of the clickety/typewriter drumming – it rarely ever stops and it's just plain annoying. I mean, dude, seriously? Other than that, this is really mostly NY-style Death Metal by the numbers along with the other "big schools" of Death Metal – decent growling, squeaky guitars, mid to fast-paced. Other than the aforementioned drums, I found it hard to get into this album because it sounds kind of clinical and lifeless and overall there just isn't anything that sets it apart from the crowded Death Metal space. It's decent, but definitely not essential... |
