Passiondale is the 8th studio album for God Dethroned, a concept album which tells the story about the fierce World War I Battle of Passchendaele that was fought in the Belguim town of Ypres. From a historical perspective the Battle of Passchendaele was one of the major battles between British and German troops from June through November 1917. Passchendaele gained notoriety for the sheer misery of fighting in thick black marshy swamps. Casualities were high for both sides with some accounts claiming as many as 500,000 - 800,000 killed, wounded, captured or missing before the Canadian Corps finally took Passchendaele on November 6, 1917. Thus endeth the history lesson! Musically, Passiondale is a ten ton, face-smashing slab of riffs, with loads of melody, thick raspy vocals, blended with a touch of clean singing. From a categorical standpoint I would label this Melodic Death Metal with a dash of Black Metal thrown in for good measure. In short, there are absolutely no weak moments on this album.

Easily God Dethroned's best since the epic Ravenous, Passiondale kicks off with a brief one minute intro before leading us into the war with the menacing "Under A Darkening Sky" as lead vocalist/guitarist Henri Sattler audibly snarls "Join The Army, Join The War, Now's The Time To Settle The Score, The War To End All Wars", hence the bloody, muddy battle begins! With every song God Dethroned provide us with a moving soundtrack into the gruesome trench warfare synonymous with the bloody battle of Passchendaele.

Being a history buff myself I have to give God Dethroned an A for crafting a extremely well thought out, brutal and catchy musical journey, which tells the tale of savage human destruction with fluid, educated precision. Highest recommendation!
