Hate Theory is a band spawning from the true gates of hell and despair… Well maybe that is a bit misleading they are actually from Ohio in the good ol’ USA. This is their debut release for WW III music and in my opinion a bit of a mixed bag. At times a very enjoyable disc but at other times just something that kind of works on your last nerve. It is really kind of odd in that respect…usually I either like an album or I don’t but this one is very dependent on the mood I am in.
The band brings forth very aggressive style vocals with mainly mid tempo chunky guitar riffs and a few melodies thrown in here and there. The vocals are pretty much the same throughout the album and this is one of my complaints. It doesn’t matter what the tempo of the music is the vocals never change whether it be an ultra slow part or mid temp or even a faster part (Very Rare) the vocals are still the scream/growl mixture that make it damn near impossible to figure out any of the lyrics. The only other problem I had with this album is simply the lack of variety. This is one of those albums you seem to get lost on which song is playing. There seems to be a lot of the same structures throughout the album and with the same vocals as I mentioned earlier this makes it difficult to distinguish one song from the next.
It seems as though I am bashing this album but I really don’t want it to come out this way. The idea behind the music is actually a pretty good one (Think old school thrash breakdown sections for an entire song) but it just doesn’t seem to have the variety to make it very memorable. I do have to admit though this is a pretty damn good album if you are in a pissy mood and wanting to bash in the head of that Jehovah’s Witness that just woke you up on a Saturday morning at 6:30 am…
