Heads up! All you Sonata Arctica fans who may have been disappointed with their last output, the metal gods have risen to free you from your temporary slumber.

The Austrian power metallers Serenity are back with their latest longplayer and is it a monster! Granted, their debut "Words Untold & Dreams Unlived" was no weak sister, but with this latest creation the Austrians have raised the bar immensely.

This is one of those releases where the catchiness of the songs and the obvious songwriting skill of the musicians grabs hold of you upon the very first listen. The vocal performance of Georg Neuhauser is just one of the many highlights on display here, the similarities between he and Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica fame are evident. The guitar playing has also improved from their prior release, the riffs are chunkier, and whereas the debut was mainly devoid of solos, this release is chock-full of ripping, exciting solos compliments of Thomas Buchberger. Keyboards also figure prominently into the overall sound, but the songwriting is so great the keys blend in perfectly to add an epic feel to the orchestration.

The production is epic with the classy use of choirs, huge sweeping choruses and a healthy dose of double bass pounding. But the main ingredient in making this such a stellar effort is the overall extreme quality of the songs themselves, there are no fillers here folks, with perhaps the minor exception being the power ballad "Fairytales".

The boys from Austria stroke a majestic home run with this baby, if you are a fan of prog-influenced Power Metal that is performed with a high level of skills, then Fallen Sanctuary comes with my highest seal of approval! Recommended to fans of Sonata Arctica or Kamelot. Definitely one of the top releases of the Power Metal genre for the year 2008.
