A veritable icon in German Heavy Metal, the great Mat Sinner took his legendary solo outfit in a heavier, faster, more aggressive direction with the release of Judgement Day, his 1997 contribution to the nascent Power Metal boom of that year. While his previous material with Sinner was touched with anthemic Hard Rock inflections, Judgement Day was altogether more reflective of his work with the then budding Primal Fear; that being fast, heavy, traditional Power Metal fused with the bluesy rasp of Sinner's omnipresent scowl. Compared to earlier albums — and indeed subsequent ones — Judgement Day is a very powerful record, documenting some of Sinner's most memorable and enjoyable work. The smoking Primal Fear workout employed on "Used to the Truth" and the scorching "White Lightning" are prime examples of why this guy stands shoulder to shoulder with bands like Rage, Running Wild and Paragon. The crunchy mid-paced headbanger "Troublemaker" is a nod to his older propensities, as is "School of Hard Knocks". But unlike later records such as Mask of Sanity, the metal tracks take precedence over the softer material, and the balance disrupts the flow of the album as a whole. That being said, there are some storming metal anthems to be found on Judgement Day, with enough screaming solos, blissful harmonies and fist in the air choruses to fill your boots.
