I originally thought that this was Poseidons Anger's first album, but even though this is album length, this is officially an EP. I reviewed their 3-song EP "Anger of the Gods" a few months ago, and those same three songs close this new EP. Now, Poseidons Anger have more than one vocalist, so the listener is in for unexpected some vocal action, as this can be a little disconcerting on the first few listens. This ranges from very melodic vocals all the way to a rather aggressive style, along with some female vocals. I can't say I really liked the vocal styles, mostly because for some reason the vocals sound a little "disconnected" from the music, which makes the end result a little annoying at times. Musically, this is relatively old school overall, just like the first EP was. This is not as consistent though, with a couple of songs sounding a little sub-par in the musical department - the opening track for example is rather boring for the first half, until the action finally kicks in around the 3 minutes mark. There's still plenty to enjoy, however, from very soothing, quiet melodies, to some wickedly old school solos (something I was hoping to hear again, after a good treat on the first EP), to some faster and more aggressive, abrasive parts with a good dose of heavy drumming and crunchy guitars.
"Attila, the Hun" is good overall, but I found that it requires a little effort on the listener's part to dig in the good stuff - not because of overly intricate compositions, but because of what often sounds demo-like in terms of production. A little extra work in that area wouldn't have hurt. Still, an interesting release once you make your way through these issues.
