Well this is a kick in the nuts. After 18 years, Dark Tranquillity have finally hit their cruise control button. "Fiction" could very well have been titled "Character II" because there isn't much difference between this and their last outing, except that it might be even catchier than last time. They might have run out of ideas, or are looking to deepen their pockets; whatever the case may be, Dark Tranquillity have contributed a fair share of masterpieces and I won't nail them to the cross for not outdoing themselves each time. "Fiction" is by far the most simplistic and catchy Dark Tranquillity release to date. Every single song here is instantly satisfying, very catchy, short, has beautiful melodies and the hooks are a testament to genius song writing. However, in all brutal honesty, all this does not sound so great after a couple of spins. Because of its catchiness and simplicity, it wears off just as quickly as any dance beat on the radio. There's a few songs on here that still show the greatness of this band – such as the opener, or "Inside The Particle Storm" – but overall, there's not a whole lot to really sink your teeth into. Hollow, pretty and catchy. That should sum this album up as a whole. Although not a complete write off (as there are a few really good parts here) "Fiction" is an overall disappointment as it is more than evident that Dark Tranquillity are going after a different crowd nowadays. This is not a sell out album. But that still doesn't mean I have to like it. Decent overall, but I would not recommend it to anyone unless you seek an entry level crash course into the world of metal. "Damage Done" may just be the last Dark Tranquillity masterpiece. I'd love to be wrong on this one though. |
