Hmmm… this is pretty damn short for a demo. The entire run-time of the demo is even comparatively short for a single track judging by the black metal standards nowadays. Anyhow, Hallowed Butchery do show promise in the minuscule amount of music that is contained in this demo, and that's what counts after all.

Sounding somewhat like the bastard son of Aborym, Mysticum and Anaal Nathrakh, mixed in with the occasional spattering of early Norwegian synthesizer histrionics, the two short tracks blast and tear in equal measures, showing that not only is their still talent submerging from the US underground, but that it's pretty fucking harsh too. Opener 'Barren Existence' has the most Anaal Nathrakh feel to it out of the two, with prominent synths punctuating the evil riffs… but then it's all over all too soon, just as you were beginning to get a real feel for it. The same goes for the slightly longer 2nd track, which is more of a blast fest at the beginning, before sliding effortlessly into an aching piano led passage which drips with emotion (partly in thanks to the blood spitting vocal delivery which couples it).

It's actually pretty exciting to hear that bands like Hallowed Butchery aren't afraid to push outside the boundaries of the common Darkthrone/Burzum clones which are just about ten a penny everywhere, and I personally would be very interested to hear what they can create when it comes to a full length. However until that time, they get a rating of 3. This is simply because less than 3 minutes of this shit simply isn't enough for me, even when it comes to a demo. Come back with a full length with material of this quality, and you will be exonerated. Go download it from their Myspace site and see for yourselves: - www.myspace.com/hallowedbutchery
