It's been several years since I last listened to an album like this one. "Ambient Black Metal" is probably the best genre description for this album. A quick comparison would be a mix of keyboard-era Burzum with the fuzzy guitar sound of earlier Burzum material. The keyboards are running the show, however, the guitar being only an accompanying instrument - pretty standard for the genre. While the album is mostly instrumental, occasionally some tormented vocals creep in, in a style partly influenced by the out-of-this-world vocals of early Burzum, although not nearly as demented and in a somewhat lower pitch. To this, add some sound effects such as the occasional ocean sound. The resulting overall effect is a rather cold and depressing album, yet quite calming and peaceful. But it lacks a little something that would give you the chills or at least some goose bumps - don't expect this to wow you, but you'll still feel like giving it a few spins in a row. Not bad at all. |
