Thy Pain is a band that I have heard some very good things about and after hearing this EP I can definitely see why. They hail from Little Rock, Arkansas and I can honestly say that I was completely floored by this disc. Simply put this one hell of a release for a bands first effort and if this EP is a indication of what is to come from them I don't see it taking to long to see them climbing into the upper ranks of the metal scene.

Thy Pain is being hyped as a melodic-power-grind-death metal band and although I can see where this title fits it is a bit hard to tell what to expect if you have never heard the band before. I think a more appropriate similarity would be a bit of harsher and darker version of Arch Enemy. The music has more in common with melodic death metal with the guitar influenced melody lines and killer hooks that Arch Enemy has become known for. The vocals are mostly harsh style growls but there are a few clean passages as well (not very often however) and this adds a bit of a change and adds that little extra to the overall sound.

The only complaint I have is simply the songs are to short and are over way to soon but I guess it wouldn't be a EP with seven songs that lasted 45 minutes…:) Fans of melodic death metal and Arch Enemy in particular will really want to seek this one out. This is definitely a very impressive debut and I eagerly look forward to more from this band in the future. Highly Recommended.
