German thrash metal gods Sodom are back with another album. Following up M-16 is no easy task. I was really looking forward to this album after all the good things I had heard about it from other people. After a bunch of listens I have to say that it is a letdown after the phenomenal M-16. Maybe I'm being too hard on this album, but that is only because this is from Sodom and I know they can do more than this. The music here is all about war. No other band can pull off thrash war metal like Sodom. The guitar tone is slightly muddy and the vocals don't sound quite right either. I think the production is a little sloppy. Onkel Tom's trademark war cry isn't as powerful as it has been on other albums. The bass, drums, and guitar all sort of blend together making the album feel muddy and a chore to pick out each instrument in the music. With some better production this could have been a much better album. Sodom are back in 2006 joining many other thrash bands that just released albums like Exodus, Kreator, and Destruction. I am hoping this will trigger some sort of thrash revival. This is a good album, although not as stellar as M-16 or Persecution Mania. Sodom can still write great songs, and with some better production this album could have easily been my favorite album of this year so far. It's not their best, it's very good, but is hard to compare albums when you have been around nearly 25 years. A must for Sodom fans and a worthy pick up for thrash fans. |
