Another fine member of the Wod Van cult in Aachen, Verdunkeln are a very underground band who are so kvlt they don't even have anything printed on the inside of the booklet: just a blank, black foldout. Cool. They released a demo previously, but it was not a released demo, so this is the first real output from them. Limited to 300 copies, of which I have number 94. This is riffy, aggressive stuff like a more low-fi Ritual. The production is a bit raw, sounding a tad muffled, but that helps the underground atmosphere, and we know how important atmosphere is in this kind of music. What distinguishes Verdunkeln is the quality songwriting with good hooks and riffs to get your air guitar hand limbered up. The obscure German lyrics are an added bonus to increase the menacing, inimical feel of the proceedings. I wish there was more to say about this, but really, if you like old-school Black Metal that isn't addicted to speed, then Verdunkeln are a band to watch. |
