In the crowded genre that is death metal, Altering Fates and Destinies is one of those albums that sounds more distinctive than most. It's crushing and brutal and sometimes so slow as to flirt with doom/death territory, but it's also very melodic and even atmospheric. The growls alone sound heavy enough to pin you to the ground and crush you, really top-notch vocal work here. Overall the music is slow to mid-paced, sometimes kicking it up a notch with some faster passages. The album can get pretty melancholic at times, a bit of a downer of sorts, and I wouldn't throw this into an headbangable album, but rather something closer to doom/death in that it's all aurally crushing the listener slowly and making them ask for more. A little long at 54 minutes, I think it may have benefitted from being a few minutes shorter, but your mileage may vary. Good stuff. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
