Second album in two years from this band out of Indiana, of all places. This is Doom/Death, which is a well-mined vein, but then again, there are not a ton of bands working in the style right now. Firmly in the style of classic bands like Katatonia or My Dying Bride (from the old days in the '90s, needless to say), Mother of Graves are aiming for a specific sound, and they are getting it. The production is solid, even if it could be heavier, the vocals are pretty faceless, but the real point of a band like this are those mournful Doom riffs and melodies, and in this area the band shines. The overall songwriting is a bit shapeless, and so the parts of this are stronger than the whole, but a worthy album. |
