Ars Moriendi is the debut EP from Tennessean death metallers Venomous Invokation who play evil, old-school death metal paying homage to classic-era Morbid Angel and Deicide. There are some traces of Necrophobic here as well, particularly on the final song, "Mistress of Blood," which midway through explodes in characteristic and memorable rolling riffs and double bass-drum work. The production on this EP is intentionally raw, and as a result the songs sound as if they are drenched in filth, which fits well with the overall oppressive and violent atmosphere of the music. Despite this, the instruments are easy to make out, which is good. The vocals are a little too high in the mix, though, and I don't much care for the multiple layers of vocal styles used on parts of all tracks here. The purpose is probably to emphasize power and discomfort, but to me it's just annoying. That said, some highs and lows are to be expected from a debut EP, and overall, I was pleasantly surprised given that they only have just under 12 minutes (excluding the intro) to leave a pretty good impression. A debut album is something to look forward to. |
