Some refreshing melodic death metal here for a change. On Divergence NightWraith are a little all over the place: the base is solid melodic death metal, but there are also some melodic black metal elements and a surprising nod to progressive rock that gives some passages a '70s or early '80s vibe, especially the keyboards and synths. The album closes with a cover of "Us and Them" by Pink Floyd, so that gives you an idea of where they have ventured. The vocals are what you'd expect for the genre, a growl that stays clear from the extremes and is somewhat easy to decipher. That clashes a little bit with the music which overall is catchy and has an overall positive vibe. I didn't really like the album on the first few listens, but with time it started to click. It's a busy one and there are many layers to peel. NightWraith have thrown a lot of influences into their songs and that's often a recipe for disaster, but they've managed to make it work and created a rich and diverse album. |
