Review

This is a twenty-year-old album. Construction of Evil was Necronomicon's 6th album, released way back in 2004, and so this is a rerelease from Metal Scrap Records and Total Metal Records for the 20th anniversary. Necronomicon are a very cult band, as they came up with the big German bands from the thrash explosion in the early '80s—the era when Destruction, Kreator, and Sodom were defining the Thrash sound—but this band was always kind of an also-ran, sometimes derided as a "poor-man's Destruction" by the kinds of people who have been overrating Destruction for 40 years.

Back in the day this band got dinged for playing highly standard Thrash, but by 2004 the genre was dying and they sounded old-school rather than derivative. It has to be said and praised that Necronomicon sound exactly like they did in 1986, just with a better recording job. I do wish this was more raw-sounding, but then I was always more into Sodom than the cleaner kinds of Thrash. Right now, with old-fashioned Thrash on an upswing, this album sounds ahead of its time, right on target with what so many young bands are trying to do. If you like classic Thrash then you should already know this album, but if you don't then this is a good time to remedy that.
