Despite claiming that they form a unique blend of post-black metal with death metal melodic sensibilities, Old Moon have the kind of sound you'd expect from a Pacific Northwest black metal band on their debut EP. It has the sweeping tremolo melodies and mood you'd expect, though they do rely more on second wave-esque keyboards and aggression than average, and the album is overall at its best when all the elements come together into a lush wall of sound that carries real emotion to it, specifically on the track "Failure." Sadly, a lot of this is let down by a weak guitar tone, competent but unexciting riffs, and songwriting that's generally too simple and lacking in punch to feel like it's going anywhere. This is fine while it's on, but Old Moon have a long way to go if they really want to stand out. |
