Apparently between record labels at the moment, Spain's Blackhearth have chosen to follow up their 2021 album The Wrath of God with the independently released EP Feast of the Savages. The slow, plodding of The Wrath of God didn't do much for me and I found it repetitive and uninteresting, so I wasn't sure what to expect on Feast of the Savages, which opens with a spoken word/instrumental called "The Whore" and sounds like something you'd hear opening a black/death release, a style very different from Blackhearth's previous releases. However, the next three songs are not black/death, rather darkened power/heavy metal not too far removed from Mob Rules' later material. Strong melodies and catchy choruses are what Blackhearth are going for, led by the title track, which is the strongest of the bunch, and for the most part they succeed. Hopefully this EP is an indicator of the direction Blackhearth is heading in as it suits them much better than the style of their last release.
