Totengott have been a going concern since 2013, but it's taken three albums and a year after the fact for me to have even heard of them. This is something I take as a mark of shame, because if Beyond the Veil is anything to go by, I've been missing out on a brilliant band that successfully builds on a base of doom metal with black and thrash elements to make something akin to older Celtic Frost if they modernized their sound and got doomy in a more mystical and straightforward way instead of what we got on Monotheist. With a production sporting heaviness and clarity in equal parts, they prove themselves to be seasoned experts in their craft and create masterful tracks like "The Architect," the two-part title track, and the massive 13 minute closer "The Golden Crest," all of which have gotten under my skin and refused to let go since I first heard them. Oppressive, ambitious, and impressive, Beyond the Veil is an excellent work that rivals the highs of those it takes influence from and will haunt you long after it's done. Highly recommended. |
