Italian artist and musician Leonardo Trevisan continues his ode to the early NWOBHM and '70s heavy rock sounds on the second album from his Elle Tea solo project. When I reviewed Fate Is at My Side, mostly because the cover art sucked me in, I commented that maybe the wavering between hard rock and heavy metal was due to it being a first effort, but after listening to The Past from Which I Ran, it's clear that is the sound Trevisan is going for. The vocals and songwriting remain simple and not overly exciting with influences ranging from Blue Oyster Cult and UFO to early Iron Maiden and Manilla Road (the acoustic "Paper Sailed Ship" reminds me of "The Fountain" from Mysterium, though nowhere near as good). Trevian as an artist is quite good and the cover art is very cool, capturing the vibe of '80s sword and sorcery with the weirdness of the esoteric artwork of the band Eloy (the cover for Metromania, which I saw in an ad in Kerrang! has always stuck with me). Some of The Past from Which I Ran is perfectly serviceable NWOBHM-inspired hard rock/heavy metal (the title track, "No Saviour," "Even if You Go") but some is just too accessible and pop-oriented ("Runaway Heart," "In Memories I Roam") to be of much interest to most metal fans. The Past from Which I Ran is another album from Elle Tea skirting the edges of heavy metal, so if your tastes include hard rock, you might get some mileage from it, but is average at best as what it does.
